It is likely that Umar ibn al-Khattab was the one who built it, and the Ayyubids returned the Islamic monuments for Mihrab.

These columns are originally built by the Crusaders who engraved animals’ faces on them.
Then, they were reused by the Ayyubids who removed the animals’ faces.
The mihrab is located in the middle of the southern wall of Al-Aqsa Mosque and on one line with the chain dome, located in the middle of the mosque, confirms that the Al Khalifa Umar ibn al-Khattab put the mihrab in this place.
